The achievements, problems and prospects for democratization for the countries of East-central Europe are discussed in this book, which believes that this region is the one with the greatest opportunity for democratic consolidation over the next decade. It also suggests that the countries within it - Poland, Hungary and the Czech and Slovak Republics - are the most likely next entrants to the European Union. This study looks at East-central Europe both country-wise and thematically, giving special attention to historical and international factors as well as political parties, civil society and political culture.
