As a reflection on the making and implications of colonial bilingualism, this study traces the hierarchical relation between the English and vernacular spheres in the Bombay-Pune region from 1830-1881. This time span represents an important period in the emergence of a public sphere in colonial western India. In analyzing the conditions under which the colonial intelligentsia in western India was able to achieve a position of ideological influence, this study also raises questions about the displacement of the meaning and spaces for hegemonic articulation with colonial modernity.
