解説
There has been a long tradition of European explorers, scientists and historians describing Latin America as it looks to them. This is a study of the other point of view to find out how Europe and European appear to Latin Americans. The book examines versions of the Spanish conquest in accounts narrated by the invaded people. Its main emphasis, however, is on 20th-century. After analyzing modern treatments of the conquest in dance, theatre, verse and novels, it assesses attitudes to Europe expressed in various forms during the 20th century and concludes with a study of the ways in which Latin Americans have appropriated features of European culture for their own advantage. A chapter on Latin American relations with the USA gives an important wider context to the argument.
