The fall of the Berlin Wall provoked one of the most complex and dramatic political processes of the 20th century in German unification. This study examines the impact of unity on the German labour movement and considers the extent to which trade unions have coped with the poltical, economic and organizational consequences. This volume is a detailed account of the unions and the unification process, and provides an insight into the changing nature of the German system of industrial relations. The study begins with consideration of the former German Democratic Republic as a unique case of post-communist transformation, and looks at the political dynamics of the unification process after 1990 and the changing nature of industrial relations in West Germany since 1945. An assessment is then made of the organizational problems of achieving unity among the East and West German trade union movements, the development of labour market policy and the evolution of union-employer relations in the Eastern states. Finally, the Alliance for Work initiative in the late 1990s is considered, and the prospects for the German system of industrial relations entering the 21st century discussed.
