解説

John Monro was physician to Bethlem Hospital, the archetypal "Bedlam", Britian's first public institution for the insane. This account of Monro's life and time studies his career through the lens of contemporary medical practice and social culture, and is as much about the contexts in which he worked as about Monro and his family. Alongside this historical-biographical account, the authors provide a complete, annotated edition of Monro's 1766 case book. This gives an insight into the mad-trade's customers and patrons and the elations between the mad-doctor and his patient's families and other practitioners.
