This text explores how black identities have been formed in the 20th century. Focusing on black experiences in North America, the Caribbean and the UK, it compares and contrasts how different experiences have occurred in the context of migration patterns and considers: whether black experiences are homogeneous, or whether they contain an array of similarities and dissimilarity; and to what extent they depend on the particular historical and geographical terrain, and thus on commonality and diversity. The history of black settlement and the development of black communities in the UK and US is examined, as is the expression of black politics through movements such as Pan Africanism and Afrocentricity, the Civil Rights movement and Black Power. The political activities of black women's groups is assessed and the impact of black popular culture is explored.
