This study compares and contrasts the emancipation of Catholics, Jews and Protestants in France, Britain, Germany and Italy during the 19th century. By comparing and contrasting the experiences of religious minorities in different European countries, this team of international contributors throws new light on the changing attitudes of the state to these small but often influential groups. This book raises questions about what drove the move for religious emancipation. Was it an attempt to incorporate these minorities into the new nation states? Or was it motivated more generally by liberalism and "modernization"? Was it largely an urban phenomenon or did it affect attitudes in the countryside at large? Did it have a class bias? With chapters on British Jews and Catholics, and Italian Jews and Protestants, many common themes emerge.
