This text sets out to discover whether 90 Asian lone mothers from the Indian and African sub-continent living in London experience additional problems to white lone mothers because of their different ethnic and cultural background. This investigation is wholly devoted to the experience of Asian lone mothers, with the aim that it will shed some light on any difficulties specific to their group. Although most of the 90 women acknowledge that the Asian culture could cause them difficulties, being far more conservative that the English culture regarding marriage, the family, the position of women, marriage breakdown and lone parenthood, this did not mean that all their experiences were negative. Even though the majority of mothers no longer saw their former partners, they were not isolated from their family and friends or the local community, with whom they shared amicable relationships as well as receiving various types of support. Although many of the sample said they were suffering from some mental and emotional complaints because of their lone parent status, their general outlook was largely positive. Lastly, it found that the low living conditions of the mothers were similar to those of the lone parent population at large living in Britain.
