Evidence of institutional and structural racism within social welfare agencies is well established in Britain. Since the 1980s this recognition has led to a number of apparently progressive policy proposals and developments aimed at countering such discrimination and disadvantage. This collection draws on evidence from ongoing research projects and attempts to update evaluation of both discrimination and anti-racist strategies in the social welfare arena. It also presents an exploration of a variety of inclusive methodological approaches and emphases that aim to give voice to the welfare concerns of the minority ethnic communities in Britain, in a way that aids the process of empowering members of these communities. As a consquence, the book attempts to cross the various divisions that exist between social policy academics, welfare practitioners, professionals, volunteers and service users. The book aims to be of interest to those concerned with "race" and racism, developments (and alternatives) in social policy and welfare and a general sociology of Britain.
