This volume assesses strategies for supporting the rights of women workers in an increasingly unregulated world market economy. It explores the threats and dangers that new conditions worldwide pose to women workers, and reconsiders traditional trade union strategies alongside new forms of organisation for women workers, together with consumer campaigns, and attempts to achieve international regulation. Issues and themes in the book cover gender inequality, changing conditions of work for women, the growing informal economy, the Asian women workers' movement, local organisations, problems of male structures, the need for a gender perspective in international bodies, and the strategic importance of campaigns designed to target multinational companies. The authors draw on case studies of women activists in India, Mexico, South Africa, Bangladesh, the UK, Korea and Philippines to illustrate key themes in the book.
