This text arises from an EU-funded TEMPUS programme linking the Universities of Umea (Sweden), Cork (Ireland) and Nottingham with the University of Warsaw (Poland), in order to assist in the reconstruction of the curriculum and pedagogy of social policy and social work on education after the change of regime in 1989. From 1993 to 1997, there have been a series of exchange visits and seminars through which the partners have explored each other's views of the options for social policy and social work in the wider Europe, which had become possible, and discussed the implications for universities and their students. The papers were all originally written in English and TEMPUS funds are available to support the translation of the Polish papers.
