This text is an attempt to analyze the underlying message of the Eurosceptic discourse in France, by focusing more on the convergence between the actors and their message than on their disagreements. Part one is a description of the movement. The text presents a brief overview of the emergence of the Eurosceptic discourse since 1988 starting with the re-election of Francois Mitterrand, in whose campaign Europe was a major theme. Specific events are addressed such as the 1992 referendum campaign for the ratification of the Maastricht Treaty, the 1994 European elections and the 1995 and 1997 Presidential and legislative polls. It also presents the main arguments of social-nationalism, highlighting the consistency of the ideology behind the fractured facade displayed by the protagonists. The dynamics of the movement are put into their historical perspective and some of the factors behind its emergence are considered.
