This work focuses on one of the controversial questions in the emerging field of "international trade and economic development", namely the relationship between trade regime and economic growth set in context of overall development effort. The theoretical and empirical aspects of the question are integrated with institutional and policy issues. Analysis is illustrated by examples which show how the theories relate to the "real world", especially to ongoing debates on developing economies as well as debates that encompass both developing and developed countries.
