The purpose of this text is threefold: first and foremost, it aims to provide a full description and analysis of the social and labour law of the European Union, which is accessible to both lawyers and non-lawyers alike; secondly, it aims to place this description and analysis within the wider context of the ongoing debate over the role of social policy and labour market regulation within what is predominantly an "economic" union of states; thirdly, it aims to address the practical issues raised by the material covered, in particular, the enforcement of EU rights within the national legal system.
