Traditional methods of land management through rapid change in the name of "development" have led to land degradation. Resettlement during villagisation increased the human and livestock population. The concentration of this increased population into nucleated settlements and the rigid so-called "land-use plans" meant a complete disruption of the traditional land management system. This study points towards the need for educational and awareness programmes to go along with policies which have environmental implications.
