This major four-volume project is a comprehensive account of the great revolutions that swept over Europe and America during the past three centuries. Throughout, the emphasis is on the popular movements that propelled the great revolutions to radical peaks, the little-known leaders who spoke for the people and the liberatory social forms to which the revolutions gave rise. The four volumes form a dramatic ensemble that encompasses the hopes and social conflicts of past eras, as well as prospects for the coming century. The third volume begins with the Russian Revolution of 1905. The narrative moves to the crisis faced by international socialism on the outbreak of the Great War in 1914, and thence to the Russian Revolution of February 1917, the Bolshevik Red October, and the crucial German Revolution of 1918-19.
