An account of the historical developments of the period from 400 to 1100AD in North Britain, this text draws on archaeological and historical evidence and uses anthropologically-informed social history to construct an explanation for the formation of Scotland. The book examines three broad themes which span the period from the time of Columba to that of Macbeth. First, it examines the transformation of the three small-scale petty kingdoms of the Iron Age into the single nation of medieval Scotland, with an emphasis on the social processes behind this development. Second, by discussing the material remains - the richest category of historical evidence for the period - the book provides an overview of the archaeology of early medieval Scotland. Thirdly, it offers an explanation for why Scotland succeeded in combining so many different ethnic groups in the process of becoming a medieval nation, thereby contributing to contemporary concerns regarding Scottish cultural identity.
