解説

Looking at the period 1870 to 1948 in Victorian society, this book examines the changing nature of welfare policy throughout these years. For most of the period under consideration, the Poor Law was the agency responsible for the sick, the elderly, the homeless and the unemployed. The underlying concern in this study is the the dual role of women - as carers and recipients of relief - in relation to the Poor Law. This book considers the nature of British welfare policy and the eventual break-up of the Poor Law, especially as these factors affected women.
