A history of press censorship in late-Stuart Britain. The text examines the process of official approval of texts for publication in the manuscript age and the evolution of the pre-printing licensing system of censorship in England - including the inter-relationship between censorship and copyright - from the introduction of printing in the late-15th century, through the two succeeding centuries, until parliament allowed the system to lapse in 1695. Discussing the factors involved in the ending of censorship, the book also looks at the unsuccessful attempts to have pre-printing censorship re-introduced down to the end of William III's reign in 1702.
