The major theme of this book is that women have been faced with prejudice and insult in relation to their ability to perform "men's work", despite undertaking such tasks perfectly satisfactorily. The book relates the story of the women workers on the railways during the years 1832 to 1995, describing what happened when an all-male workforce was infiltrated by women, the way women were relegated to peripheral or "domestic" duties in the industry, and how women coped in a workplace designed for men.
