It provides a range of linguistic and documentary evidence to chart the development of the game from its origins in the early Middle Ages to the eve of the First World War, by which time the major developments in modern lawn tennis had occurred including the development of the main championships in the United States, Britain and Europe, the rise of Olympic tennis and the Davis Cup. The book is illustrated with many medieval and Renaissance representations of the game, along with photographs of more recent lawn tennis history.
