解説
"Primary Sources in Political Thought" makes available a number of important but, until now, inaccessible texts in the history of political thought. Many of these have been overshadowed by longer or more famous works by the same authors, lost in the obscurity of periodical publication, never translated into English, or overlooked or neglected by modern scholars. The series aims to present definitive editions of these texts. Jean Bodin (1529-1596) is chiefly known for his theory of the modern nation state, "Six Livres de la Republique". Bodin's treatise, however, "Responce aux Paradoxes de Monsieur de Malestroit", addressed the particular problems of economic and financial policy. This is a complete translation of Bodin's treatise based on the first edition of 1568 and incorporating the additions and amendments introduced into the 1578 second edition. These additions include a substantial section from the "Six Livres de la Republique" in which Bodin argues a case against debasement of the coinage and in favour of sound money. The volume thus gives a complete picture of Bodin's political economy and the stages of its developement.
