This text aims to summarize the findings of a major report on the single market programme - its overall effectiveness and ensuing benefits. It is published as a requirement of the European Commission to report to the Internal Market Council on 26 November 1996 on the impact of the single market and forms an integral part of an accompanying series of 39 sectoral background studies, "The Single Market Review 1996".
