解説

The rapid movement to a new economic system in the post-communist world has been accompanied by a sharp rise on social tensions. Deepening inequalities have meant an increase in poverty, crime, and social marginalization, and social groups have experienced profound changes in their expectations and social identities. Among the most vulnerable to the effects of the transition are women from the poorer sectors and ethnic minorities, while young people are disproportionately represented among the unemployed and frequently express feelings of disorientation and anomie. The rise of nationalism and inter-ethnic hostility has often accompanied the collapse of communist states - nowhere more dramatically than in former Yugoslavia. Focusing in particular on the condition of women and ethnic minorities, this book takes as a central concern the gendered and racialized character of nationalism and the specific forms the phenomenon is assuming in the societies newly emerging from a history of centralized communist rule.
