Many cities in different parts of the world have experienced a fundamental economic, cultural and social transformation in recent decades. This volume addresses the global processes of urban transformation empirically and theoretically in a number of case studies of particular cities. The papers cover a range of research in terms of space, time and aspects of urban reality. Some case studies focus on urban life in the context of economic and social structure, or urban renewal in the context of national and local politics. Others deal more specifically with the interrelations between culture, economy and space. The academic focus is variously sociology, political science, economy, geography and architecture. The contributions are divided into three sections. In the first section the question of global and long-term historical transformation of cities and urban space is addressed. The second section contains case studies of symbolic and cultural dimensions or urban change in particular cities. The third section includes papers on how these kinds of transformations articulate social power, conflicts of interests and policy interventions. This part of the book ends with a chapter in which an attempt is made to draw together some of the threads from previous chapters in a proposed agenda for comparative research into the dynamics of power in cases of urban development and renewal.
