This book provides a wide-ranging new introduction to the main theoretical approaches to the study of International Relations. Readers are initially introduced to the notion of theory in the study of global politics and the discipline's internal debates. Nine theoretical traditions are examined, beginning with the established orthodoxies of liberal internationalism, realism and neo-realism. The alternative and dissenting approaches of rationalism and Marxism are then explained, followed by the theoretical challenges posed by critical theory and post-modernism. Finally, the growing influences of feminism and green political theory are assessed.
