This text addresses issues of gender, race and age in an analysis of the "infiltrator" figure, who is one who penetrates a closed territory, only to expose the fantasy upon which power relations are founded. This study engages with theories of multiculturalism and hybridity in a series of related texts, from Claire Bretecher's cartoons to Colette's recipes, from the diary of a Martinican cleaning lady to James Bond thrillers. The author's analysis explodes the notion of binary oppositions: the insider/outsider, black/white, straight/queer, rich/poor, solid/fluid. The infiltrator, she argues, is an ambivalent figure, offering a new way of articulating cultural differences and cultural practices.
