解説

This book is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to Nordic government and politics for students of politics and European studies. The five Nordic countries have developed in distinctive political, social and economic directions in during this century. Nordic Government and Politics provides an analysis of their differences and similarities, showing how they function politically and reviewing the main features of their economic, social and foreign policies. In the 1990s the Nordic countries have had to take far-reaching decisions concerning the future of their societies and the extent to which they can maintain their welfare states which are so characteristic of the model societies which they built between the 1920s and 80s. The profound changes that the European Union has brought domestic politics and international relations are analysed. Nordic Government and Politics is the only systematic comparison which takes account of the changes flowing from the new voting patterns since the 1970s and the new international context of the 1990s, including the likely roles of the new EU members and the implications of a new regional focus on the Baltic.
