Setting out to illustrate how special-interest groups in the USA advocate policies that benefit themselves but inadvertently hurt the poor, this book shows how this inequity occurs in both product and labour markets - from subsidies to protectionist trade policies, and from drug prohibition to the government's provision of public education. The author also provides an analysis of US welfare policies, focusing on the intractable problems built into the current system. He argues for radical welfare reform, advocating case-by-case solutions centred on "tough love" and, as far as possible, private charities. The book includes statistical information on income distribution, and a section devoted to international policy issues.
