解説
Words, gifts, commodities and money are all familiar signs which we exchange. Human beings establish and maintain social identities through the dynamic practices of exchange. This book develops a theory of exchange based on Peirce's semiotics and suggests that four of the most important modern and post-modern theories - Marxism, functionalism, structuralism and post-structuralism - can be read as allegories of exchange. Practices of everyday life, problems of ethnographic interpretation, specific issues in modern and post-modern capitalism, and even, as the author demonstrates, literary texts such as "The Iliad" are re-evaluated through a critical lens which should advance understanding across a wide range of disciplines.
