The subject of this book is the 1996 European Intergovernmental Conference and is divided into two parts. Part one explains the objectives of the Intergovernmental Conference and presents a collection of papers which analyse the issues facing the Conference and the options for the future of the European Union. The papers are written from four different perspectives - those of the business community, the European Parliament and Commission, academia, and professional Euro-commentators - providing the reader with a comprehensive view of the subject. Part two gives a commentary on, and the text of, the Interim Report of the Reflection Group, the body charged with preparing the Conference. This section not only provides further information on the agenda and issues facing the Conference, but also provides insights into the process of the Conference itself. The Conference comes at a time of widespread public scepticism about the achievements of the Community and the Union and of deep divisions between the member states over which direction European integration should take. This book contains no answers, but provides some explanations with the aim of making "Europe" more comprehensible to its citizens. The book should be of value to all those who want to learn more of the objectives, issues and processes surrounding the 1996 Intergovernmental Conference, and in particular to those with a professional or academic interest in current European affairs.
