The activities of lawyers play a prominent role in our society and are increasingly the focus of wide-ranging debates. The contributors to this study identify issues of central concern to the legal profession in the 1990s, such as the role of women in the profession, regulation, and the globalization of solicitors' work. Recent economic, demographic, political and legislative changes which have helped to shape the legal profession and influence perceptions of its role in recent years are discussed and set against the background of social change. The contributors ask how the profession is developing, where it is now, and what should be its role as we approach the end of the century.
