Despite its central importance in the modern world economy, Japan remains an enigmatic country to many outsiders. The vast changes that have occurred in Japan since World War II continue to seem less significant to many than the memory of a militaristic period. The book describes the economics and politics of contemporary Japan from both a Japanese and Western perspective, explaining for a Western audience the real dynamics of a society that, while being an aggressively successful country, is in reality fully integrated with, and operating in tandem with, the West. It also discusses Japan's Official Development Assistance policy.
