During the 1930s a series of labour rebellions occurred in almost every colony in the British Caribbean. This study examines the question of why these rebellions flowed right across the region. Part one traces the historical rootsof the rebellions, focusing on class struggles, class formation, and the origins of early labour organizations in the 1920s. Part two examines in detail the rebellions in each of the territories, starting with Belize in 1934 andending with Guyana in 1939. The concluding chapter compares both the common and unique features of the rebellions, and provides the reader with a way of comprehending the origins of modern Caribbean political culture.
