解説

Using an international comparison of several industrial nations, the sociologists contributing to this book explore the impact of social class on educational attainment, defined as progress within the school system. They compare educational inequality in Sweden, Great Britain, Germany, the United States, Ireland, France, the Netherlands, Hungary and Poland, addressing the long-term effects of this relationship by analyzing the role of education in future labour-market positions and in social status across generations, as well as exploring changes in educational inequality in Sweden over more than half a century. The contributors also evaluate the role of vocational schooling in unequal educational attainment and social stratification on the basis of a comparative study of Sweden, Great Britain and Germany.
