This is one of a series of texts which provide support for all professional groups involved in the provision of health and social care. This title provides the student with an introduction to social policy. The authors explore the importance of the conceptual connection between health and illness. The stress throughout the book is on the significance of social policy in preventing ill health and disability, as well as supporting the sick and disabled. A broad approach to social policy is taken and the text is organized around the provision of welfare in the following contexts: public, private, voluntary and informal. Consideration is given to competing ideologies of welfare and the development of welfare, as well as contemporary provision. Based on the authors' first-hand teaching and research experience, this text has been designed with the student in mind: a comprehensive reference list is provided at the end of the book, together with a glossary of important terms.
