解説

This major work, which includes contributions from both Ukrainian and Western academics and specialists, comes at a time when the importance of Ukraine's position within Central and Eastern Europe should not be underestimated. Peace and stability in the region depend to a large extent upon Ukraine's democratic development and the success of its reform processes. After an introductory chapter providing a historical framework, the essays that follow concentrate on the principal challenges facing current state-building endeavours in Ukraine in terms of both external and internal developments. The external dimension is treated in Part 1, in which Ukraine's relations with its neighbours and with the West are examined. Part 2 looks at its economic reforms, problems of ethnicity, crime and corruption, and domestic political developments.
