This work seeks to determine Indian policy in the ASEAN region over the period 1967-1995, within the framework of a derived relationship. The year 1967 is chosen as the starting point as the ASEAN came into existence then. The study concludes with a discussion of recent developments in this 28-year relationship. Within this period there were different regimes in power in India, and the study examines the continuity and change in India's policy towards the ASEAN sub-region under these different regimes. It seeks to explain India's policy in the ASEAN sub-region but does not presume to analyze relations among the ASEAN states. Politico-security concerns are the study's central focus, with only one chapter devoted to economic relations, and it does not explore the socio-cultural dimension in India-ASEAN relations.
