解説
The "Key Issues" series aims to make available the contemporary responses that met important books and debates on their first appearance. These take the form of journal articles, book extracts, public letters, sermons and pamphlets which provides an insight into the historical relevance and the social and political context in which a publication or particular topic emerged. Each volume brings together some of the key responses to the works. This collection of writings explores how late-19th century science affected the construction and understanding of gender categories. Presenting a range of views on issues raised by the women's movement, the volume particularly focuses on the question of middle-class women's education, occupations and professions. A selection of male and female scientists and non-scientists present an overview of the themes and complexities of the arguments surrounding aspects of the "woman question".
