This text provides an analysis of the causes, character and consequences of international population movement in post-war Europe. Comprising four sections - overview, politics, economics and culture - it examines Europe-wide trends, with case studies of countries within a comparative framework. Alan Hargreaves deals with issues of terminology, chronology and demography, first establishing basic conceptual categories and empirial data on international population movements and the settlement of new ethnic minorities in post-war Europe. He goes on to examine both the multi-lateral policy initiatives and the directives of individual states in relation to immigrants, refugees and ethnic minorities. Given the rising importance of immigration on the political agenda, he looks at its significance as a party political issue, as well as the role of ethnic minorities as active participants in the political process. The changing role of, and contribution made by, immigrants to the economies of both receiving and sending countries is analyzed from an economic perspective. The book concludes by drawing on public opinion data to examine popular attitudes to issues surrounding immigration, and by investigating the interplay between majority and minority cultures in the spheres of education, the media and religious institutions.
