The author focuses on the role of the democratic state in coping with the challenges of ecological crisis, information technology, nationalism, changing concepts of gender and the unequal distribution of wealth within and between states. Rather than confining itself to the national government level, work and social situations in its analysis, this text also looks at tribal, feudal and dynastic societies and at local and international levels. Basic concepts such as power, liberty and justice are explored from a variety of political perspectives. Different models of democratic government are also compared.
