解説

In the spring of 1975, communists gained control of South Vietnam and immediately tried to implement socialism throughout the reunited country, but economic failure, foreign-policy crises and popular resistance to dogmatic programmes repeatedly undermined the regime's efforts. Today the leadership is attempting to move toward a more market-orientated approach, while at the same time maintaining its original goal of building a socialist society. This revised edition traces the course of Vietnamese history from its origins to the end of the Vietnam War. In considering various aspects, such as the country's political structure, its foreign relations, its economic situation and its cultural heritage, the book also sets out to show how the country has been affected by a generation of conflict and socialist transformation. It concludes by looking at the factors underlying the Vietnamese revolution, and how the changes have affected both the region and course of the global Cold War.
