Throughout the Western world, new patterns of family formation have emerged. Cohabitation and motherhood outside marriage have become more widespread, and women are attaining higher levels of education, are marrying at an older age, work more frequently outside the home, and have more reproductive freedom due to new advances in contraception. This book, which includes contributions by sociologists and demographers from eight West European countries and the United States, compares national variations to explain the connection between the new role of women and family formation in post-war society.
