This book examines the reconstruction of the Afghan economy during the US and international occupation of the country between 2002 and 2021. Through exploring the effects of embodied institutions, the economic policy of non-interference and the decision to allow resource allocation to be determined by market forces and private individuals is analysed in relation to how it has led to the development of manufacturing sector. This way, the investigation has aimed to highlight the extent to which the economic design led the economy to move away from subsistence farming toward more productive resource allocation. The book aims to underscore the socially contingent knowledge of manufacturing in a context where the private sector’s involvement is fledgling, bringing out the limitations and possibilities that this feature entails, among them the need for some level of bureaucratic intervention to coordinate resource allocation in such a context. It will be relevant to students and researchers interested in political economy and development economics.
