4to, xx, 580pp, 109pp, cotemporary black calf binding, spine and front board lettered and decorated in gilt, spine in compartment, gilt edges, inscribed by former owner Edmund C. Bittinger (1819-89) on fly leaf: "Edmund C. Bittinger, U.S. Steamship Susquehanna, June 7th, 1851. On Commodore Perry's Expedition to Japan".
本書は19世紀の米国聖公会で使用された標準的な祈祷書ですが、特筆すべき点はその来歴にあります。前の見返しに、"Edmund C. Bittinger, U.S. Steamship Susquehanna, June 7th, 1851. On Commodore Perry's Expedition to Japan."と書き込みがあります。Edmund C. Bittinger（1819-89）は1850年に米国海軍の従軍牧師となり、同年にペリーの旗艦サスケハナ号に赴任しました。1852年にペリー艦隊が外交交渉の為、日本へ出航した際も、彼は本書を携え船上の牧師として任務を遂行していたと考えられます。また、彼は日米開国前に国禁を犯して神奈川から川崎へ徒歩で移動したことでも知られております。日本の開国資料の一つとして大変興味深い1冊です。
