リベラリズムを超えたヘーゲル-政治的・経済的民主主義の弁証法
Ferro, Bernardo, Hegel Beyond Liberalism: The Dialectic of Political and Economic Democracy. 245 pp. 2025:8 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <753-32>
ISBN 978-1-009-58474-6 hard ¥27,483.- (税込) GB£ 95.00

Hegel's political philosophy has long been associated with some form of social or welfare liberalism. Bernardo Ferro challenges this interpretation and shows how Hegel's work harbours a more ambitious philosophical project, pointing to a different vision of modern society. Ferro argues that Hegel's account of the state should be read not as a complement to the concept of civil society, but as a direct challenge to its underlying logic. He then draws the political and economic conclusions implicit in this line of approach, arguing that the conscious pursuit of the common good which Hegel regards as essential to a rational state is not compatible with either a capitalist production system or a constitutional monarchy: a true dialectical synthesis of the particular interests of individuals and the general interests of society entails nothing less than a comprehensive democratization of the economic and the political spheres, and the need for this transformation holds the key to Hegel's enduring political relevance.

〔英訳〕太宰春台著 政治経済学に関する著作-『経済録』と『経済録拾遺』
Shundai, Dazai, Dazai Shundai: Writings on Political Economy. Ed. & tr. by P. Flueckiger. (Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought) 300 pp. 2025:10 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <753-243>
ISBN 978-1-316-51032-2 hard ¥14,465.- (税込) GB£ 50.00
ISBN 978-1-316-64972-5 paper ¥6,072.- (税込) GB£ 20.99

Dazai Shundai (1680-1747) is a critical figure in Japanese political thought, who developed his philosophy in response to a perceived crisis in the status of the ruling samurai class, of which he was a member. This volume introduces sections from his most significant work of political thought, Keizairoku (1729), and its addendum Keizairoku shui (1744). Extracts present Shundai's program of political and economic reform, as he grappled with the upheavals and opportunities accompanying the breakdown of feudal agrarianism and the emergence of a modern commercial economy. While Shundai accepted the inevitability of this economic transition, his vision of political economy remained conservative, with a focus on strengthening samurai-class supremacy. Peter Flueckiger offers a critical introduction to Shundai's ideas, exploring the nuances of his engagement with Confucian thought, and extensive annotations provide further textual and historical context. This volume thus demonstrates how Shundai's writings prefaced increasingly ambitious theories of state-managed economic growth in early modern and modern Japan.

Webel, Charles P., The Reality of This World. Volume Two: The Fate of This World and The Future of Humanity. (Routledge Studies in Social and Political Thought) 206 pp. 2025:10 (Routledge, UK) <753-18>
ISBN 978-1-032-20668-4 hard ¥41,948.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

The Reality of this World analyzes one of the most influential concepts known to humanity-- "the world"-- focusing primarily on the material conditions of our existence. It is the companion to The World as Idea: A Conceptual History (Routledge, 2022). Together, the two volumes constitute "The Fate of This World and the Future of Humanity."In this book, Charles P. Webel examines the theories and policies that have constructed the world as it is. He proposes strategies for transforming it into a more equitable and sustainable habitat both for humans and for the other species with whom we co-exist on Earth. In doing so, he describes how the social and natural sciences, as well as philosophy and the humanities, have abetted our understanding of this world and explores why globalization and rationalization, as well as such "alternative realities" as digital and AI technologies, may simultaneously advance our collective well-being while also putting life on Earth at existential risk. In conclusion, Webel proposes political and other solutions to mitigate such risks. The Reality of this World will be of great interest to scholars in fields ranging from philosophy and intellectual history to political and social theory, as well as to students and a general public interested in understanding and transforming our world.

Cziganyik, Zsolt / Dimovska, Iva (eds.), Utopia and Democracy: Theories, Practices, Fictions. (Palgrave Studies in Utopianism) 244 pp. 2025:9 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <753-1032>
ISBN 978-3-031-89912-6 hard ¥32,171.- (税込) EUR 129.99

This book provides a comprehensive review of the relationship between utopia and democracy, challenging the tendency in Western scholarship to assume that an ideal society is inherently democratic. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, the book covers an extensive range of historical periods and genres, and places emphasis on an understudied issue in the field, namely the role of Eastern and Central Europe in the study of utopianism. The various chapters reflect on the frequently overlooked role utopian thought plays in the development of democratic political structures, despite the fact that the history of classical utopianism demonstrates a multitude of non-democratic patterns. With contributions from political theory, history, cultural and literary studies, the volume explores a range of contexts, demonstrating how utopias offer both a critique and an inspiration for the evolution of democratic societies.

地政学、国家、政治学-地政学の創設者R.チェレーンのコンテクスト化
Davidsen, Peter, Geopolitics, The State, and Political Science: Contextualizing Rudolf Kjellen, Founder of Geopolitics. (Routledge Geopolitics Series) 320 pp. 2025:11 (Routledge, UK) <753-1033>
ISBN 978-1-032-78863-0 hard ¥41,948.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

Geopolitics, the State, and Political Science offers the first comprehensive intellectual history of Rudolf Kjellen (1864-1922), the founder of geopolitics who formulated a systematic organic theory of the state. Kjellen played a decisive role in shaping both the institutional emergence of political science and the conceptual evolution of international relations and political theory.Through extensive archival research and employing the contextualist methodology of the Cambridge school, this book discovers and rethinks the contexts in which Kjellen's work developed. It situates his theories within early twentieth-century academic debates over political science and its emancipation from law, history, and philosophy. The work demonstrates how the foundations of political science were forged through concrete academic disputes, methodological controversies, and institutional struggles, while reaffirming the enduring value of historical contextualization for understanding both the origins and contested legacies of the modern state.Much more than a biography, this study is an important contribution to the intellectual history of political theory, international relations, and the social sciences. It is of interest to historians, political scientists, geographers, political philosophers, and international lawyers.

Theodosiadis, Michail, Ancient Greek Democracy and American Republicanism: Prometheus in Political Theory. (Edinburgh Studies in Comparative Political Theory and Intellectual History) 296 pp. 2025:2 (Edinburgh U. Pr., UK) <753-1037>
ISBN 978-1-3995-3729-2 hard ¥26,037.- (税込) GB£ 90.00

Ancient Greek Democracy and American Republicanism explores the archetype of Prometheus in political theory, representing faith in human agency and self-governance. It borrows perspectives from Hannah Arendt and Christopher Lasch, tracing Promethean elements in the philosophy behind the ancient Athenian polis as well as in early American republican thought, which laid the foundations of the American Revolution and also of the Populist Movement during the nineteenth century. The second principle of Prometheanism revolves around a 'tragic vision' of life and human nature; Prometheanism questions optimistic ideologies advocating human perfection or endless improvement. Ancient Greek democracy and early American republicanism maintain a balanced - else called melioristic - approach to human agency and potential. They value the importance of action, without promising endless betterment and assured happiness. Finally, cultural heritage and identity are seen as crucial for participatory (Promethean) politics. With this in mind, the book criticises mainstream liberal trends and questions the ardent optimism and cultural nihilism of the republicanism of the French Revolution.
