This book presents the seven entrepreneurial activities (SEA) model of new organizational constitution, a prescriptive extension of the four flows model tradition of communicative constitution of organizations (CCO) theory.Organizational Constitution in Entrepreneurship explains the SEA model in detail, illustrating it with autobiographical accounts from Deanna Bisel's years of experience as an entrepreneur. The volume explores how entrepreneurial efforts to create and maintain organizations involve interrelated activities. In doing so, it offers a vision of new organizational creation and maintenance as (a) communicative and material, (b) initiated by value propositions, (c) difficult to achieve, (d) having periods of partiality, (e) being the result of constitutive leadership distributed among members, and (f) dependent upon constitutive momentum generated in organizational learning. This unique volume will be a key reference for students and scholars of organizational communication, management, business studies, entrepreneurship, and communication studies.

Svalgaard, Lotte, The Elephant in the Room: Engaging with the Unsaid in Groups and Organizations. 248 pp. 2023:3 (Routledge, UK) <690-372>

A group is working on a business challenge. The group members are under pressure. They have a lot to accomplish and a limited amount of time. After first attempting to develop an overview of their common task, they try to make a plan to ensure an efficient group process. The planning is proving difficult. We've all been there. We are in a working group or at a meeting, discussing a topic or a challenge, and all the while, as a separate track running underneath our conversation, there is a subtext that no one explicitly addresses. This is an example of 'the elephant in the room.' Most of us notice the elephant, it gets in the way, and it's difficult to deal with until someone points at it and says, 'There it is, let's take a look at it and reduce its impact.'With an engaging use of examples and questions, the book addresses how we can best deal with the elephant and thus promote job satisfaction, creativity, and productivity. In the context of action, what we notice often recedes into the background and gradually slips out of focus until we eventually reconnect with our need to reflect and recreate a space for it. This book addresses the challenge of focusing on, holding on to, and acting on what we notice 'in the middle of it all.' Maintaining a simultaneous focus on task and process - what we do and what we notice - is what I define as 'double awareness.' Double awareness is not only a core capacity but also a core challenge. The aim of the book is to promote understanding and awareness of this core challenge and to inspire both reflection and action in anyone wishing to improve their capacity for double awareness. How can we define and understand the practice of mindful avoidance? And can we, as members of groups and organizations, begin to practice mindful action by engaging in and acting on what we notice, in real time?

Shortlisted in the 2024 Business Book Awards (People, Culture & Management category)Toxic organizational cultures and leadership have led to major reputational failures, with the greatest impact felt by the people who dedicate their careers to working for these organizations. And yet organizations do not become toxic overnight. They do not consciously set out to break rules and regulations, nor do they actively seek wrongdoing. This book defines toxic culture, explains how toxic cultures emerge over time, and provides practical approaches supported by in-depth research for overcoming a toxic culture at the individual, team, and organizational level.Pragmatic and applicable, the book provides a call to action that can be applied in any type of organization. The book then identifies interventions and levers that can be implemented by executives, boards, and HR practitioners to prevent toxicity and to change toxic cultures back to healthy, positive workplaces. Drawing on research and interviews with senior HR leaders and executives, the book provides:An understanding of the four stages of toxic cultures and the impact of performance pressures in driving toxicityAn appreciation of the role of senior leadership and personality traitsPractical tools and guidance on interventions for practitioners to build and sustain a healthy and positive workplaceSenior executives, HR, and organizational development practitioners in local and global organizations spanning a range of industry sectors will find this book invaluable.
