This is the first volume of A Social and Economic History of the Theatre to 300 BC and focuses exclusively on the theatre festivals in the city of Athens. It presents and discusses in detail all the documentary and material evidence for the Dionysia in the city of Athens, the Lenaea and the Anthesteria. It is the first comprehensive reappraisal of the Athenian theatre festivals undertaken in over seventy years and the first ever to attempt a history of the Athenian theatre as an institution which recognises the social and economic forces that underpinned it. All texts are translated and made accessible to non-specialists and specialists alike. The volume will be a fundamental work of reference for all classicists and theatre historians interested in ancient theatre and its wider historical contexts.

アメリカの経済学者とギリシア経済 1947~62年
Psalidopoulos, Michalis, American Economists and the Greek Economy, 1947-62. 240 pp. 2025:7 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <751-212>
ISBN 978-3-031-87347-8 hard ¥28,772.- (税込) EUR 119.99

This book explores the role of American economists in Greece between 1947 and 1962. With a focus on economic thought and political relations, it examines the Greek economy following the Second World War and highlights the economic ideas and policies that brought Greece out of an economic depression. Collaboration between Greek, American, and British policymakers, economists, politicians, and administrators in providing humanitarian relief, economic rehabilitation and monetary order is highlighted. By examining the specific economic policies and how they were articulated, a nuanced view of policy making is presented that provides insight into policies that were shaped by both New Deal idealism and post-war realism. This book offers unique insights into the post-war reconstruction of Greece and the exchange of ideas between American and Greek economists. It will be of interest to students and researchers working within economic policy issues, international political economy and the history of economic thought.

〔英語版〕ユーロの歴史-経済的入門
Schaefer, Stefan / Schaefer, Ann-Stephane / Wanek, Cory S., The History of the Euro: An Economic Introduction. 200 S. 2025:12 (Kohlhammer, GW) <751-262>
ISBN 978-3-17-043544-5 paper ¥5,995.- (税込) EUR 25.00

With their common currency, the Europeans embarked on an experiment in 1999 that is unique in the history of money. It was preceded by numerous attempts to complement the advancing political integration since the 1950s with monetary integration. Today's currency union does not mark the end of this development. As long as the economic policies of the member states do not better support the ECB's monetary policy, European capital markets remain fragmented, and key EU members refrain from adopting the euro, this historic project remains incomplete.

O'Hara, Phillip Anthony, Long Waves of Growth, Hegemonic Power, and Climate Change in the World Economy: Dutch, British, US and Chinese Capitalism and Structural Polycrises. 624 pp. 2025:8 (Springer, GW) <751-265>
ISBN 978-981-9641-31-4 hard ¥31,170.- (税込) EUR 129.99

This book investigates eras of major geopolitical and socioeconomic power, development, relative demise and potential renewal, for four major political economies. It concentrates on the Dutch Golden Age of the late 1500s and 1600s, British hegemony of the 1800s, Pax Americana of the 1900s, and Chinese potential hegemony of the 2000s, as well as long wave patterns of change over successive centuries to the present (and to some degree into the future). Dutch, British, US and Chinese economies are situated within patterns of long-term successive rise and fall (and fall and rise) of economic growth, hegemony and climate change in the world political economy, including linkages between core, periphery and semi-periphery. Patterns of multiple crises tend to appear in-between hegemonic periods, and climate change often undergoes complex dynamics through time, while currently climate anomalies are emerging during mostly long wave downswings and polycrises in the world economy. Contemporary themes of the book include the ongoing competition for world domination between the US and China, the conflict over Ukraine-Taiwan that some think may generate world-war 3, the climate change crisis that continues to plague the world, and whether the world and its major economies are likely to undergo a Golden Age into the future. Chapter 7 of this book on US hegemony and long waves includes extracts of material that won the Myrdal Prize for Book of the Year Prize from EAEPE as well as Journal Article of the Year from Curtin Business School. Ideas from parts of Chapter 9 emanate from a volume that won Book of the Year Award from CBS. A climate change paper that won Journal Article of the Year Awards from EAEPE and CBS informed ideas that are used in several parts of this book. The book outlines key stylized facts from the analysis and presents hypotheses for further investigation on the relationship between long-term growth, hegemony and climate change. The book uses the work of Kondratiev, Schumpeter, and company, themes in economic history, modern political economy schools, and the principles of political economy contingency paradigm to reformulate long wave, hegemony and climate change hypotheses and empirics.

S.Broadberry他編 1688年以降の経済戦争・制裁
Broadberry, Stephen / Harrison, Mark (eds.), Economic Warfare and Sanctions Since 1688. 311 pp. 2025:11 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <751-328>
ISBN 978-1-009-47489-4 hard ¥25,740.- (税込) GB£ 90.00
ISBN 978-1-009-47486-3 paper ¥8,008.- (税込) GB£ 28.00

How have economic warfare and sanctions been applied in modern history, with what success and with what unintended consequences? In this book, leading economic historians provide answers through case studies ranging from the eighteenth-century rivalry of Britain and France and the American Civil War to the two World Wars and the Cold War. They show how countries faced with economic measures have responded by resisting, adapting to, or seeking to pre-empt the attack so that the effects of an economic attack could be delayed or temporarily neutralized. Behind the scenes, however, economic measures shaped the course of warfare: they moulded war plans, raised the adversary's costs of mobilization, and tipped the balance of final outcomes. This book is the first to combine the study of economic warfare and sanctions, showing the deep similarities and continuities as well as the differences, in an integrated framework.

Cheta, Omar Youssef, How Commerce Became Legal: Merchants and Market Governance in Nineteenth-Century Egypt. 277 pp. 2025:9 (Stanford U. Pr., US) <751-329>
ISBN 978-1-5036-4339-0 hard ¥14,553.- (税込) US$ 70.00

When Egypt's markets opened to private capital in the 1840s, a new infrastructure of commercial laws and institutions emerged. Egypt became the site of profound legal experimentation, and the resulting commercial sphere reflected the political contestations among the governors of Egypt, European consulates, Ottoman rulers, and a growing number of private entrepreneurs, both foreign and local. How Commerce Became Legal explores the legal and business practices that resulted from this fusion of Ottoman, French, and Islamic legal concepts and governed commerce in Egypt. Focusing on the decades between the formalization of Cairo's practical autonomy within the Ottoman Empire in the 1840s and its incorporation into the British Empire in the 1880s, Omar Cheta considers how modern laws redefined the commercial sphere, shaping a mode of market governance that would persist for decades to come. He highlights the demarcation of a new law-defined commercial realm separate from the land regime and from civil or family-centered exchanges, and reconstructs these changes through both legal codes and state orders, as well as individual merchant voices preserved in court documents. As this book documents both individual experiences and structural explanations, it offers a rare perspective on the scope and reach of market governance over the mid nineteenth century, revealing changes simultaneously from within and without state institutions.
