Macnamara, Michael Fenwick, Sir Spencer Harcourt Butler: A Master Governor in British India (1890-1928): A Record of His Contribution Towards the Development of Modern India. XVIII, 482 pp. 2024:11 (P. Lang, SZ) <741-973>
ISBN 978-1-80374-658-6 paper ¥29,603.- (税込) SFR 116.00

The British Indian Civil Service was a small elite, which administered and governed a vast population. From their number were drawn the Governors of the various provinces. Relatively little work has been completed to explore the role these officials had in maintaining the British Indian Empire. Butler, in particular rose through the ranks of the ICS rapidly, becoming the second youngest to be promoted as Foreign Secretary and the youngest to be appointed a Governor. He was mooted as Viceroy. This book is drawn from Butler’s papers, held in the British Library, which have been edited to provide a chronological history of Butler’s personal life and of his exceptional official career. We are thus enabled to explore, not only his life in India at the personal level but to assess his input into British policy making across a wide spectrum. Most important areas include Land Settlement, Famine Relief, Foreign Policy, including towards the Princely States, Infrastructure, Industry, Agriculture, Education, Sanitation, and in response to Indian/Burmese Nationalism. An analysis of British intentions towards India is thus available. No similar or biographical work with respect to Butler has been completed.

Hammerton, A. James, Love, Class and Empire: An English Family Saga in the Middle East. (Modern British Histories) 256 pp. 2025:6 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <741-986>
ISBN 978-1-009-54176-3 hard ¥24,310.- (税込) GB£ 85.00
ISBN 978-1-009-54174-9 paper ¥8,576.- (税込) GB£ 29.99

Early twentieth-century Persia and the Persian Gulf presented a largely blank slate to the British, best known only as a vital conduit to India and a site of contest - the 'great game' - with the Russian Empire. As oil discoveries and increasing trade brought new attention, the expanding telegraph and river shipping industries attracted resourceful men into junior positions in remote outposts. Love, Class and Empire explores the experiences of two of these men and their families. Drawing on a wealth of personal letters and diaries, A. James Hammerton examines the complexities of expatriate life in Iran and Iraq, in particular the impact of rapid social mobility on ordinary Britons and their families in the late imperial era. Uniquely, the study blends histories of empire with histories of marriage and family, closely exploring the nature of expatriate love and sexuality. In the process, Hammerton discloses a tender expatriate love story and offers a moving account of transient life in a corner of the informal empire.

秋田茂著 アジアの視点から見たイギリス帝国史
Akita, Shigeru, History of the British Empire from Asian Perspectives. (Studies in Economic History) 136 pp. 2025:3 (Springer, GW) <741-379>
ISBN 978-981-9610-03-7 hard ¥31,170.- (税込) EUR 129.99 *

This book presents the history of the British Empire as the "Bridge" for creating a Global History, especially emphasizing its connections with Asian regions. The United Kingdom ruled most of the world in the nineteenth century. Its influence spread around the globe in various forms - in the white settlements such as those in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand (Dominions), in Asian and African regions represented by present-day India, in colonies acquired by military force (Dependencies), and in other regions under its economic influence through trade and investment (the informal empire). Thus, the British Empire played a key role in nineteenth-century globalization. There are many books on the British Empire in English. However, no books from Asian perspectives have interpreted it as "the means used by Asian countries for their own economic development" (and as providers of "international public goods"). Along with the East Asian economic resurgence, the weight of the global system and the world economy has now largely shifted from the Atlantic world to the Asia-Pacific region, encompassing India, as well as the Pacific coast of the United States. The global depression in 2008 accelerated this trend. We now face the task of building a new interpretation of world history with a clearer understanding of this upheaval. Redrawing world history is not an easy task but a good starting point would be to analyze the mutual relationship between the British Empire and the Asian regions, and this can be done by interpreting the historical significance of the British Empire.

革命の時代におけるE.バークとC.フォックス
Grant, James, Friends Until the End: Edmund Burke and Charles Fox in the Age of Revolution. 512 pp. 2025:9 (Norton, US) <741-18>
ISBN 978-0-393-54210-3 hard ¥9,355.- (税込) US$ 45.00

Edmund Burke and Charles Fox made common political cause in eighteenth-century Britain for twenty-five years: They supported the rebellious American colonies, attacked the British slave trade, defended religious liberty, and attempted to shield Britain's public credit from the crisis-prone East India Company. The two men were an improbable pair. But the hard-drinking, mistress-collecting Fox loved and admired Burke, feelings that the clean-living political philosopher and statesman warmly reciprocated. They moved together in the London intellectual world and jointly opposed what they regarded as the overreaching crown. Friends Until the End traces Burke and Fox's relationship through three great events: the American Revolution; the impeachment of the East India Company's governor-general; and the French Revolution, which ended their political union and shattered their friendship. With wit and panache, James Grant illuminates the politics and economics of their era and its lessons for our divided present.

近世ロンドンにおける出産、死、家庭内の宗教
Vine, Emily, Birth, Death, and Domestic Religion in Early Modern London. (Cambridge Studies in Early Modern British History) 307 pp. 2025:6 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <741-182>
ISBN 978-1-009-45723-1 hard ¥25,740.- (税込) GB£ 90.00 *

Early modern London has long been recognised as a centre of religious diversity, yet the role of the home as the setting of religious practice for all faiths has been largely overlooked. In contrast, this study offers the first examination of domestic religion in London during a period of intense religious change, between the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 and the Gordon Riots of 1780. Emily Vine considers both Christian and Jewish practices, comparing the experiences of Catholics, Sephardi and Ashkenazi Jews, Huguenots, and confirming and nonconfirming Protestants alike. Through its focus on the crowded metropolis as a place where households of different faiths coexisted, this study explores how religious communities operated beyond and in parallel to places of public worship. Vine demonstrates how families of different faiths experienced childbirth and death, arguing that homes became 'permeable' settings of communal religion at critical moments of the life cycle. By focusing on practices beyond the synagogue, meeting house, or church, this book demonstrates the vitality of collective devotion and kinship throughout the long eighteenth century.

勝利の対価-イギリス海軍史 1815~1945年
Rodger, N. A. M., The Price of Victory: A Naval History of Britain: 1815-1945. 976 pp. 2025:5 (Norton, US) <741-1454>
ISBN 978-0-393-29222-0 hard ¥10,392.- (税込) US$ 49.99 *

Across two acclaimed volumes, preeminent naval historian N. A. M. Rodger has traced the progress of naval warfare in Britain from the seventh century through to Trafalgar, combining decades of scholarship with original insights and analysis. In this final volume, N. A. M. Rodger delivers a magisterial history of the Royal Navy, beginning after its defeat of Napoleon and concluding in 1945 with the Second World War. At the end of the French and Napoleonic Wars, British sea power was at its apogee. But by 1840, as one contemporary commentator put it, the Admiralty was full of "intellects becalmed in the smoke of Trafalgar." How the Royal Navy reformed and reinvigorated itself in the course of the nineteenth century is just one thread in this magnificent book, which refuses to accept standard assumptions and analyses. Rodger's comprehensive narrative goes beyond the conduct of war at sea to tell a sprawling story of naval warfare as a national endeavor. As in previous volumes, the social history of officers and men-and now also women-has a prominent place. Along the way, he describes the development and strategic significance of submarine and navy air forces and the rapid evolution of weapons and ships (from classic Nelsonian type to hybrid steam/sail ships, then armor-clad and the fully armored Dreadnoughts and beyond). He assesses the character and importance of leading admirals-Beatty, Fisher, Cunningham-together with the roles of other less famous but no less consequential figures. Rodger sets all this in the essential context of politics and geo-strategy. Based on a lifetime's learning, The Price of Victory is a masterful culmination of one of the most significant British historical works in recent decades. Naval specialists will find much that is new and will be invigorated by the originality of Rodger's judgments; but everyone who is interested in one of the central threads in British history will find it rewarding.

Shortal, John F., A Search for Strategy: British-American Military Collaboration in 1942. (Williams-Ford Texas A&M University Military History) 256 pp. 2025:7 (Texas A&M U. Pr., US) <741-1456>
ISBN 978-1-64843-305-4 hard ¥10,395.- (税込) US$ 50.00 *

A hallmark of history surrounding Winston Churchill and World War II is that the British-American alliance comprised a "special relationship" of military, political, social, and cultural connections between the British Empire and the United States. Stressing the intimate collaboration between the American and British military advisors on the Combined Chiefs of Staff, Churchill emphasized policy consensus and downplayed any dissension or disagreements in allied war councils. In A Search for Strategy: British-American Military Collaboration in 1942, John F. Shortal argues that this special relationship did not exist in 1942. At the Arcadia Conference, from December 1941 to January 1942, Prime Minister Churchill and President Franklin Roosevelt developed a strong personal relationship, having more in common with one another than with their own military advisors. The American and British chiefs likewise seemed to agree with each other more than they did with their respective civilian heads of state on the appropriate short-term strategy. However, serious mistrust and prejudice existed among staff officers of both nations as they focused on national goals and objectives. According to Shortal, unwillingness to compromise almost tore the fledgling British-American Alliance apart in 1942. Drawing on international archival material from governmental sources, Shortal offers an in-depth analysis of the reasoning and rationale of the United States and Great Britain during the first year of the British-American Alliance. A Search for Strategy gives readers a month-by-month breakdown of diplomatic and military policies to fully appreciate the relationship forged between the allied chieftains to ensure national war aims while cooperating in World War II.

Carter, Andy, Games, Greek and Pluck: Classicism, Masculinity, Elite Education and British Sport, 1850-1914. (Sport, History and Culture 13) 330 pp. 2024:12 (P. Lang, SZ) <741-1099>
ISBN 978-1-80374-613-5 paper ¥18,629.- (税込) SFR 73.00 *

Public school education in the second half of the nineteenth century was completely dominated by classics and sport. Rejecting the view that these were competing strands resulting in friction between aesthetic scholars and athletic philistines, this book shows how classicism and athleticism were closely entwined. Using primary sources, such as school magazines and memoirs, it considers how classical ideas shaped the elite British male's view of his place in the world and his attitudes to masculinity, gender, race, class and duty. At the heart of this process were a comparatively small number of classically-educated men who influenced the reorganisation and reform of games between 1850 and 1914 laying the foundations for modern sport. This book explores their overlapping social networks, and the ways in which they sometimes co-opted ancient history, as they tried to retain control of the sporting landscape and promote an 'amateur ideal' based on a past that never really existed.
