中世社会における死者の活力
Bruce, Scott G. / Gordon, Stephen (eds.), Vigor Mortis: The Vitality of the Dead in Medieval Societies. 156 pp. 2024:12 (Routledge, UK) <735-997>
ISBN 978-1-032-88487-5 hard ¥40,095.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *

This volume explores the enduring presence and participation of the dead in the lives of premodern people from the Carolingian period to the end of the Middle Ages.Unlike modern states, which erect barriers to separate the dying and the deceased from their families, friends, and associates, premodern societies in western Europe fostered an on-going relationship between the living and the dead that was mutually beneficial to both parties. As these studies show, the dead had many means at their disposal to communicate their needs and disaffection, including ghostly visitations and unquiet corpses. For their part, medieval authors told stories about the fate of the dead and the geography of the afterlife to dissuade sinful behaviour and foster virtue in preparation for the Last Judgment. Premodern hauntings also serve as a useful metaphor for the uncertainty of archival research in recovering past voices and for the racial presumptions that inform our reconstruction of the western Middle Ages. This book will appeal to scholars and students of history and literature, especially those interested in the concept of death in the medieval period. The chapters in this book were originally published in the Journal of Medieval History.

ISBN 978-90-04-70751-1 hard ¥28,435.- (税込) EUR 110.00

The book offers studies on different aspects of the life, activity, and written works of Roberto da Lecce, one of the most famous preachers of fifteenth-century Italy. His preaching cycles in Italian cities were attended by huge crowds and are representative for the activity of many other less-known confreres and, in the meantime, exceptional for their number and success. His sermons were read and re-used throughout Europe, contributing to shaping the shared religious culture. The nine authors of this book have addressed this polyhedric figure from ten different perspectives. Contributors are Yoko Kimura, Salvatore Leaci, Andrea Radosevic, Cecilia Rado, Carolyn Muessig, Giacomo Mariani, Marco Maggiore, Lyn Blanchfield, and Steven J McMichael.

After having been weakened by the Great Western Schism, the papacy recovered its leadership position during the Renaissance. It expanded and reformed its bureaucracy, gained control over councils and cardinals, and established its authority over the Papal States and the city of Rome, which it developed and beautified. The papacy also negotiated working relationships with civil rulers through concordats and resident nuncios, worked to defend Christendom from Muslim conquest, sought to bring the Eastern churches into unity with Rome, promoted the expansion of Christendom through missions, tried to suppress heresies and clarify Catholic doctrine, and removed many abuses. To a remarkable degree, it succeeded.

In Toledo in 1529, a converso named Pedro de Cazalla declared that the connection between man and God was but a thread and that it should not be mediated by the Church. Hardly an isolated phenomenon, Cazalla's inner spirituality was a widespread response to the increasing repression of religious dissent enacted by the Inquisition. Forced baptisms of Jews and Muslims had profound effects across Spanish society, leading famous intellectuals as well as ordinary men and women to rethink their sense of belonging to the Christian community and their forms of religiosity. Thus, in this book, early modern Iberia emerges as a laboratory of European-wide transformations.

Are there shadows in medieval art? Studies on the role of shadows in art history have either glanced over or ignored the medieval period, yet people of the Middle Ages certainly saw and thought about shadows and recorded their ideas about these phenomena in texts and images. This book examines references to shadows in science, religion, and folklore of the Middle Ages. Through the lens of fifteenth-century manuscript painting, it investigates visual, metaphorical, and supernatural shadows in art to discover what shadows meant to the medieval viewer.

Dragnea, Mihai / Marek, Milos / Jawor, G. et al. (eds.), Wallachian Mobility and Settlement along the Carpathian Arc. 272 pp. 2024:12 (Routledge, UK) <735-1001>
ISBN 978-1-032-81942-6 hard ¥43,065.- (税込) GB£ 145.00 *

The story of Wallachian mobility and settlement is remarkably central to the human condition. At its core, it reflects a fundamental drive to enhance daily life by migrating to new territories. The Wallachian features not only shaped their own existence but also left a lasting impact on the regions they inhabited along the Carpathian Arc. Through their migration beginning roughly in the 14th century and culminating in the 18th, they not only became part of a larger narrative of human resilience and adaptability but also reflect humanity's drive for better opportunity.Wallachian Mobility and Settlement Carpathian Arc, a project initiated by the Balkan History Association, seeks to fill this void by bringing together the research from multinational scholars of various academic disciplines. Scholars and students seeking to further understand the prevailing academic literature on this topic will find this an invaluable, one-of-a-kind resource. The volume serves as a segue into various academic discussions and encourages exploration of socio-cultural exchange, economic impacts of migration, interethnic interactions, legal systems, environmental effects, technological transfers, linguistic changes and studies on diaspora. Delving into this comparative analysis highlights the complexities and interconnectedness of history.

Academic pride, the desire for fame and success, the importance of titles over the teaching practice, the gap between real capabilities and official recognition, the pomp of ceremonies and rituals, scholarly nepotism, and institutional privileges: these issues plagued medieval universities from their very beginnings and were discussed by theologians through the notion of "doctoral halo." Over the centuries, this concept became a means to praise, criticize, and reflect on the professional category of theology students and teachers (and other culture-related agents as well), providing interesting insights into their intellectual self-awareness. Based on unedited texts and new interpretations, this book offers unique perspectives on the intellectual history of the medieval and pre-modern world.

Gallucci, Mary, Performing Witchcraft, Exorcism, and Abortion on the Italian Renaissance Stage: The Witch and The Possessed Girl by Antonfrancesco Grazzini. (Anglo-Italian Renaissance Studies) 208 pp. 2024:12 (Routledge, UK) <735-1003>
ISBN 978-1-032-74908-2 hard ¥40,095.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *

Antonfrancesco Grazzini's plays, La Spiritata (The Possessed Girl) and La Strega (The Witch), are available in English for the first time, with notes and an "Introduction". These plays deal with witchcraft, superstition, sexuality, and abortion. The context for such themes is analyzed in the "Introduction". Grazzini enhanced literary drama with elements from popular performances. He influenced other playwrights, including in England, where The Possessed Girl was adapted as the Elizabethan comedy, The Bugbears. Writer and linguist John Florio used Grazzini's plays in his lexicon of Italian for English learners. Grazzini celebrated artistic and popular traditions of Renaissance Florence; he is significant for writing and preserving many literary genres, especially the burlesque and carnivalesque. He participated in Florentine spectacle and theater, as a writer of plays, a composer of interludes, and a chronicler of festive events. His importance to the development of the Italian language is evident in his plays.

Leading historians and archaeologists offer a comprehensive introduction to the increasingly entangled worlds that spanned the globe between 600 and 1350 CE.The period between the seventh and fourteenth centuries is hardly thought of as an era of globalization. Entire societies in the Americas, Australia, and Oceania developed in relative isolation from other parts of the world. Even on the interconnected landmass of Eurafrasia, many people had little to do with processes of transregional exchange.Yet the period 600-1350 CE in fact witnessed an explosion of connectivity amid the consolidation of sophisticated approaches to human organization. Flows of people, goods, and ideas across regional boundaries intensified, changing lives at all social levels, from rulers to the enslaved. In the Americas, large cities and north-south trade networks took shape. The Arabic-Islamic conquests of the seventh and eighth centuries, along with the Mongol expansion of the thirteenth, tied together diverse polities from southeast Asia to sub-Saharan Africa. Regions also became more culturally and politically integrated: Latin-Christian models of social organization spread across Europe; the Sinitic written language drew eastern Eurasia into a common elite culture; and the accumulation of significant agricultural surpluses in the Indian subcontinent supported the emergence of a settled political order.Entangled Worlds sees the completion of the magisterial six-volume set A History of the World, offering an authoritative introduction to a vibrant era of global history. The distinguished contributors make clear that there never was a stagnant "Middle Ages" wedged between Antiquity and Modernity but instead a period defined by decisive strides toward global connection, urbanization, and the cultural and political formations we live with today.

Lawrence-Mathers, Anne, The Magic Books: A History of Enchantment in 20 Medieval Manuscripts. 368 pp. 2025:3 (Yale U. Pr., US) <735-1013>
ISBN 978-0-300-24443-4 hard ¥8,485.- (税込) US$ 38.00 *

A fascinating and highly original history of medieval magic told through twenty key illuminated manuscripts Medieval Europe was preoccupied with magic. From the Carolingian Empire to Renaissance Italy and Tudor England, great rulers, religious figures, and scholars sought to harness supernatural power. They tried to summon spirits, predict the future, and even prolong life. Alongside science and religion, magic lay at the very heart of culture. In this beautifully illustrated account, Anne Lawrence-Mathers explores the medieval fascination with magic through twenty extraordinary illuminated manuscripts. These books were highly sought after, commissioned by kings and stored in great libraries. They include an astronomical compendium made for Charlemagne's son; The Sworn Book of Honorius, used by a secret society of trained magicians; and the highly influential Picatrix. This vivid new history shows how attitudes to magic and science changed over the medieval period-and produced great works of art as they did so.

This sourcebook serves both as an introduction and a wide-ranging reference work for human attitudes to nonhuman animals in Latin Europe during the Middle Ages. Under twelve headings, it includes numerous translated passages from Latin and vernacular texts that reflect human conceptions and uses of other animals during the period 300-1520. Theologians, philosophers, encyclopaedists, bestiarists, hagiographers, chroniclers, huntsmen and writers of agricultural manuals, cookbooks and plague treatises all had something to say about the place of nonhuman animals in their world and their interaction with humans, or simply recorded incidentally what they did in their writings. ISBN 978-1-032-33127-0 hard ¥43,065.- (税込) GB£ 145.00 *

The acquisition of table manners and rhetorical skills, the interaction between medicine and eating, and the presence of food in literature and religion shaped Peninsular societies and connected them to a Western European background during the Middle Ages. The Renaissance, however, marked a turning point in world history, and the reader will learn how eating evolved in the kingdoms of Spain and Portugal during the early Renaissance in fields such as morals, politics, medicine, literature and religion. The book also explains how the cultural conception of food was exported by Iberian explorers to the Americas and Japan. The present volume focuses on a two-fold issue: food as a cultural element that united Mediterranean European society, and food as a cultural encounter between European explorers and new worlds during the early Renaissance. Therefore, this volume continues the themes introduced in the previous monograph, Food, Feasting and Table Manners in the Late Middle Ages: Volume I: The Iberian Peninsula in the European Context, but takes into account the new, global scale of the era.Readers will find here a panorama of what, and how, people ate in Mediterranean Europe during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and learn how cultural aspects of food were exported to the new lands that were explored during the Age of Discovery.

Rudenko, Konstantin, The Archaeology of Volga Bulgaria in the 10th to Early 13th Centuries. (East Central and Eastern Europe in the Middle Ages, 450 - 1450, 95) 364 pp. 2024:11 (Brill, NE) <735-1023>
ISBN 978-90-04-54984-5 hard ¥34,897.- (税込) EUR 135.00

This book focuses on Volga Bulgaria (10th to early 13th centuries), the only Muslim state in Eastern Europe before 1300. For several centuries, it operated as a bridge between the Christian West and the Muslim East. As such, it is widely believed that the colossal transit of oriental silver coin through the state was the foundation of the Bulgar economy while Islam consolidated statehood in the Middle Volga region. Drawing on the rich archaeological record, Konstantin Rudenko argues against this view, demonstrating that the Bulgar culture was instead formed on the basis of its own resources. The Bulgars thus represent a unique example of relatively rapid change from nomadism to sedentism and urbanization, with no significant influence from neighboring, developed states. Cultural syncretism therefore emerged as a key characteristic of Volga Bulgaria.

ISBN 978-90-04-71907-1 hard ¥33,605.- (税込) EUR 130.00

In order to have a constructive discussion about feelings in the late Middle Ages, it is beneficial to first evaluate how the feelings of individual men and women were defined. As such, the purpose of this book is to explore the words used by late medieval men and women to refer to their feelings and to examine their meanings. By doing so, we can better understand the efforts of late medieval society to express, use, and transmit certain feelings, especially as they related to manoeuvres of power or the articulation of social values. The life experiences of men and women take on meaning through the emotionality they entail, and the intensity of these experiences build certain memories which link the individuals within a society. As such, this volume argues that examining the management of emotions in late medieval society will allow us to better understand it. By discussing theoretical frameworks for the historical study of emotions and presenting a range of case studies from the Middle Ages, the authors of this book illustrate how the management of emotions reflects and sheds light on the code of values and behaviour that guided this society. ISBN 978-90-04-71908-8 hard ¥31,020.- (税込) EUR 120.00

The relationship between rulers and their subjects is always channelled by emotion. This volume explores the specific tones this relationship took on in the Middle Ages, as well as their accordance with a concept of power based ultimately on agreement, an inclination to visualise emotions, a social pedagogy based on fear, and a religious ideology which placed humanity between divine order and divine wrath. It also examines the emotive models used to rule society and deal with conflicts. Together, the contributions in this book demonstrate how our understanding of late medieval society can be enhanced by recognising the emotional strategies present in the game of power and how they were used to build authority. ISBN 978-90-04-42966-6 hard ¥30,761.- (税込) EUR 119.00

How was bestiality perceived in the Middle Ages? The answer is far from simple. Depending on the context, it might be a kingmaking ritual, a boys' game, a pact with the devil, a peccadillo or a capital offense. As dangerous as it could be to be suspected by one's own neighbors of committing bestiality, medieval literature and art are full of often exhilarating erotic interspecies encounters. In the end, this volume suggests that there is a zoophilic streak in all humans - the medievals as well as ourselves. Contributors are Crystal Beamer, Bailey Flannery, Katherine Leach, Marian E. Polhill, Anna Russakoff, Joyce E. Salisbury, Andrea Schutz, Jacqueline A. Stuhmiller, Larissa Tracy, and Tess Wingard.

This volume examines the 'phenomenon' of translation from Greek into Latin from the eleventh century to the thirteenth. These translated texts prompted Western scholars to rediscover the works of classical Greek and Byzantine authors and reshape the medieval intellectual landscape. Though our agenda focuses on translations of scientific texts, the collection of essays here also offers the reader insights into the broader cultural, social, and political functions and implications of individual translations and translation more broadly as a practice. Contributors are Dimiter Angelov, Peter Bara, Pieter Beullens, Alessandra Bucossi, Luigi d'Amelia, Paola Degni, Michael Dunne, Elisabeth Fisher, Brad Hostetler, Estelle Ingrand-Varenne, Marc Lauxtermann, Tamas Meszaros, James Morton, Teresa Shawcross, and Anna Maria Urso.

What lies behind an island? Is an island just a piece of land surrounded by water? Or is it from a cultural, symbolic, and even geographical perspective much more than that? Considering the symbolic nature of islands as a longue duree and through the analysis of maps, texts, and historical accounts, this book explores how the depiction of insularity encodes specific meanings and analytical levels which shed light on medieval and modern worldviews.
